After weeks of coaching, these career comeback women discovered this about themselves

On 28 November 2018, 10 ladies celebrated their graduation from TalentCorp’s first ‘The Career Comeback Coaching Programme Recruiters’ Edition.

We held a ceremony to acknowledge and recognise the achievement of these ladies and to thank the recruiters that had contributed to the success of our first Coaching Programme.
Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Pn Hajah Mahuran Saro (centre): “Always find new knowledge to upskill yourself and keep on moving forward.”

Returning back to the workforce can be a scary and daunting experience. Some women, who have been out of the workforce for some time, may find that the job-search methods they have used is outdated in the age of social media.

In order to help these women, TalentCorp’s Career Comeback Programme team launched ‘The Career Comeback Coaching Programme Recruiters’ Edition on 12th September 2018.

Some women, who have been out of the workforce for some time, may find that the job-search methods they have used is outdated in the age of social media.

Ten women returnees were coached by five recruiters from:
Kelly Services Malaysia
Michael Page Malaysia
CareerXcell Sdn Bhd
Ambition Group
Hydrogen Group

The candidates were selected during the Mini Career Comeback Fair Recruiters’ Edition held on 1 August 2018. During the fair, recruiters had the opportunity to interview women who want to return to work after a career break. Each recruiter “adopted” two to three returnees and gave them hours of coaching.

Under the Coaching Programme, returnees were coached on goal setting, how to speak confidently, building employable strengths and skills, personal branding, turning negatives into positives, managing expectations

Cheryl Lim: "I want to give back to society. There’s nothing in life is more important than family."

One participant, Cheryl Lim Mei Yean, left the workforce in 2017 to care for a family member. Her last position was Head of Communications. During the pitching session, she shared about a newly found passion that she discovered during a session she had with a recruiter. She said that she wanted to do more in her career and not to think of it as just a job.

“I want to give back to society. There’s nothing in life is more important than family,” she said.

Lim is now going to start a social enterprise that will help women in need and also give work opportunities to under privileged people such as the Bottom 40 income group (B40).

Najihah Najwa: “I always thought that I was just an administrator, but I found a new passion through this coaching programme: teaching.”
Najihah Najwa Mohd Saleh, who worked as an executive, has been out of the workforce for about two years. She said that she has emerged to become a better version of herself.

“I always thought that I’m just an Administrator, but I found a new passion through this coaching programme which is teaching,” she said, adding that she had only applied to administrator positions until then.

She is currently starting a new job that she has gotten from the coaching programme - she is now a teacher’s assistant and is looking forward to a future as a teacher.
Grace: "(Recruiters) just want to help you to find a placement in the job market."
Grace Marippan, a recruiter from CareerXcell, said that the sessions not only help returnees with their confidence levels but also help them dig deep into themselves and make them think about what they really want to do in life. For example, returnees may rethink their current career choice and consider whether it is the right one for them.

She went on to say that the exciting thing about these sessions is the relationship one builds with the recruiters. In the end they just want to help you to find a placement in the job market. She also added that the programme actually works and most of these ladies have already found work placements and should kick off their career before the New Year.
