Hewlett Packard Enterprise gives back to students

The Malay proverb “melentur buluh biarlah dari rebungnya” (meaning, to shape a bamboo, one must do it while they’re still shoots) aptly describes Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Day. Organised in collaboration with the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) and TalentCorp in November 2015, the HPE STEM Day enabled 150 students to gain early exposure to various hands-on STEM-related activities such as robotics, game design and music technology as part of the company’s efforts to raise awareness of science, technology, engineering and mathematics among underprivileged students.

The students, who were from Rumah Pengasih Warga Prihatin, Asnaf As-Solihin and Rumah Anak Yatim Ummi, were introduced to two-hour workshops that looked at science and technology in a fun and interactive manner. The workshops provided them with the opportunity to not only learn but also to explore and apply their creativity and newfound knowledge. Facilitated by TalentCorp’s GEMS 2.0 and Upskilling participants, the students were also mentored by 10 HPE interns.

MDeC’s Director of Talent Division, Muhammad Imran Kunalan Abdullah who was present at the event remarked that such events will “increase (the children’s) interest and enable (them) to learn more about science and mathematics, exposing them to the latest industry requirements”.

During the workshops, students had the opportunity to assemble and programme robots to perform basic actions and movements, design and sculpt their own favourite 3D cartoon characters, create games through an MIT open-sourced programming software called Scratch, and designed and test out their own musical instruments.

The event concluded with the certificate presentation and prize-giving ceremony to both participants and winners by Vijayaraj Chowdry, Director of Hewlett Packard Enterprise. TalentCorp’s Head of Malaysian Talent Development-Graduate Employability, Siti Norliza Mohd Sahar was also on hand to present the Certificate of Completion to the participants of 2015 HPE GEMS 2.0 and Upskilling programmes.

Commending HPE for their efforts, Siti Norliza believes “the HPE STEM Day is in line with the Malaysian Government’s efforts to boost the percentage of Malaysian children and youth taking up STEM education and career to 60% from the current 42%.”
Editor’s Note: Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) is now named Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC)
